Where to camp in the Western Cape – Pt 1

We have finally received the news that we have all been waiting for, a lift in leisure travel restrictions, which can only mean one thing! You can now camp and caravan again in the provinces that you reside in. This is the perfect chance to explore your province, find little gems and connect with the great outdoors.

We are incredibly lucky to have a fantastic Gecko Xtreme Owners Group who have put together a list of their favourite camping sites across the country. We will be sharing some of the campsites on this list with you in our new “Gecko Where To Camp” series over the next few weeks.

First, on our list, we explore the beautiful Western Cape. With incredible mountains, scenic seaside views and nature all around the Western Cape has a little something for everyone. Take a look at some of our favourite campsites below:

Driehoek Guest Farm

Driehoek is an operating farm situated in the heart of the Cederberg about 240 kilometres from Cape Town on the N7. They offer beautiful camping sites on grass stands alongside the river. The camping site is equipped with ablution facilities and electric points to ensure a comfortable and relaxing stay. Driehoek is a family friendly nature resort surrounded by magnificent mountains. It is an ideal base for hiking to well-known landmarks such as Tafelberg, Sneeuberg, the Maltese Cross, Welbedacht and Panorama caves and the Wolfberg Arch.

Sanddrif Holiday Resort

Sanddrif Holiday Resort is situated on the Dwarsrivier farm and is the home of Cederberg Private Cellar. The farm is approximately 250 km north of Cape Town and lies in the heart of the Cederberg Wilderness Area, which is well known for its spectacular rock formations, expansive vistas, rock art and fynbos. The campsite is equipped with electricity points and full ablution facilities. They have a range of fun and exciting activities on offer, which include hiking, trail running and more. When the ban on alcohol gets lifted you can also enjoy wine tasting and try out Cederberg Brewery’s ice-cold craft beers which will be on sale at the farm shop.

Kardoesie Citrusdal

Kardoesie is situated along the N7 at the top of Piekenierskloof Pass. They have a breathtaking view of the Renosterhoek Valley and is the perfect base for activities in and around the area. Just an hour and a half drive from Cape Town this is a short trip for those looking to get out of the city. The campsites have electricity points and full ablution facilities, there is an amazing restaurant, a deck to enjoy mesmerising sunsets and a pool to cool down in on those hot summer days.

Silwerstrand Caravan Park

The Silwerstrand Caravan Park, a privately-owned resort in Robertson, is one of those places that have caravanners and campers returning time and time again. This caravan park is situated right on the banks of the Breede River which makes for an idyllic camping spot. This is definitely a camping spot for those who are into water activities like fishing or canoeing. If you are looking for a comfortable and picture-perfect campsite, this is it.

Donkieskraal Private Game Reserve

Donkieskraal is only a two and a half hour drive from Cape Town and offers a quick escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. The campsite is safe, secure and surrounded by indigenous fynbos and breathtaking sandstone rock formations.

There are five semi-shaded campsites on grass, each with its own braai area, power point and tap. There are ablution facilities and a special room for mothers and babies and disabled persons.

While enjoying your stay, you may see a few animals roaming freely around the reserve, nature at its best.
